In some places,however, the rider may prefer to descend and lead his mount. Wilsons Map of Catalina Island will be found useful for all expeditions;a guide, however, may well be taken at least on the first occasion. Very interesting walks may be found either along the tops of the ridges, oralong the bottom of the canyons, but visitors are especially warned againstattempting to cut across country by going up and down the sides of canyons, asthese are frequenth very Pebbly Beach In the event of anyone getting lost they can find their way home by thesimple method of steadily ascending until they get to the ridge above them, andfollowing this ridge up to its highest point, from which they will easily see theirway either to the Coach Road or to Avalon. High boots are recommended as snakes are occasionally found on the writer has never heard of anyone who has been bitten, but it is always .wellto take precaution. SHORT EXPEDITIONS. Very interesting expeditions may be madefrom Avalon in either direction by the seacoast. A visit to Descanso Canyon, distanceabout half a mile, should on no account bemissed. The road starts from the Bath-house,and passes the Tuna Club and the boat buildingshops and the little Salt-water Pier. Thename of the pier is derived from the water-pipe it supports, and which is used for obtaining a supply of sea water which is pumped to thegreat tanks at S. Johns Heights on the cliffoverhead. T
