Breast cancer reconstruction surgery. Scars on a 55-year-old woman's back, 2 weeks after breast reconstruction surgery. The breast reconstruction surgery was carried out following a bilateral mastectomy for breast cancer (breast carcinoma). Here, skin was taken from the patient's back and grafted onto the breasts to replace skin lost during the mastectomy. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. The cancer can invade surrounding tissue and spread to other parts of the body (metastasis). Treatment is with removal of the tumour only, where possible, or complete removal of the breast. Surgery is often combined with radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
