Montezuma Well was home of Sinagua Indian cliff dwelling. An oasis natural limestone sinkhole.

Montezuma Well cliff dwelling of Montezuma Castle and the Sinagua Indian people. Ancient dwelling ruins stand on the sides of the rim above the well. An oasis for wildlife and people thousands of years ago. Montezuma Well is 368 feet wide and a consistent depth of fifty five feet. Natural limestone sinkhole is continuously fed by underground springs. The water is highly carbonated due to high levels of carbon dioxide. The well does not support fish since there is very little oxygen. The temperature can be 20 degrees cooler along the rim of the Well. The Sinagua culture had a tranquil setting along the forest shaded trail.
