Barrens Buck Moth (Hemileuca maia) Female hanging on a Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida) and releasing her pheromones to attract a mate. This species flies in the fall and lays eggs in a ring on a twig of foodplant that overwinter. In the mid-atlantic and northeastern US this species is generally found in barrens habitats and on mountain ridges that are populated with Scrub Oak. This female was photographed in September on a Nature Conservancy Preserve (TNC) in the Poconos of Pennsylvania.
