Cosmoceras proniae ammonite (right) from the Jurassic of Russia (165 Million years ago) showing the remarkable preservation in the ammonite fossil of the metamorphosed nacreous layer that gives structural shell colours. And Pleuroceras pyrite ammonite from the Jurrassic of Buttenheim Germany preserved in pyrites (fools gold FeS2). The patterns and rideges of the outer shells of ammonites can be used to identify them. Together with the pattern of inner chamber sutures these structures were quite distinctinctive between genera and species.
