The former,inspired by a converted Indian chief, vowed, like Clovis of old, that if the God of theChristians would grant them victory, henceforth they would serve Him alone. TheOnondagas were victorious ; and, though all did not prove true to their vow, still agoodly number remained faithful, and thus formed a nucleus of converts. MISSIONARIES AT THE NORTH, 103 3. Garacontie,though not as yet a Christian, had listened with attention tothe instructions of the missionaries; grace touched his heart,and he at length resolved to embrace the Faith. He wasaccordingly baptized with great solemnity in the Cathedra]at Quebec (1669). After this, he always remained faithful tohis religion, and continued the warm friend of the Frenchand the protector of the missions. 4. Jesuits in tlie Nortli-West.—In 1656, a projected mission to Michigan was frustrated through the crueltyof some pagan Iroquois.
