Southampton, Hampshire. – The Cunard-White Star Line transatlantic passenger liner, RMS Queen Mary, being manoeuvred out of Southampton Docks by a tug boat. The ship was built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland and sailed on her maiden voyage on 27 May 1936. Apart from a period during the Second World War, when she was converted and employed as a troopship, she remained in service until 1967. She won the Blue Riband prize for the fastest transatlantic crossing in August 1936 and then again in 1938, retaining it until 1952.
