The bicarbonate, or, as it is commonly called, carbonate ofpotash, is sometimes used in indigestion, to correct acidity, to pre-vent the formation of lithic acid or red gravel; and for the latterpurpose it is frequently employed in gout, which, as we have al-ready had occasion to mention, is frequently complicated with theformation of red gravel. When it is found necessary to administereffervescing draughts to relieve irritability of the stomach, manypractitioners prefer this salt to soda. The effervescing draught incommon use is made by dissolving a scruple of the bicarbonate ofpotash in water, and then adding fifteen grains of citric acid, or thesame quantity of tartaric acid, or three drachms and a half of lemonjuice. The dose of the bicarbonate of potash is from ten to thirtygrains three times a day. There are a number of salts of potash. Potts Disease. (See Spine, Diseases of.) POULTICES (CATA
