There were five children in the family ofwhich Joseph Ambrose Weldt is a member,his oldest brother, David, being a pilot atSan Francisco; the next, Edward, died in SanPedro; Frank, who was a justice of the peace,is also deceased ; and lohn died at Wilming-ton. Joseph A. spent his boyhood days on thefarm and received his education through themedium of the public schools of 1886 he went to San Pedro and clerked forhis brother David, who was a ship-chandlerthere, then in 1888 established a business ofhis own as ship-chandler and grocer. He suc-ceeded in builing up a fine business and in outgrown his old quarters, he erecteda large new building for the store on Beacon. HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORIl 665 and Sixth streets. He is identified with manyof the important business interests of SanPedro and is a leader in all departments ofpublic life. He is one of the directors of theBank of San Pedro, was the organizer of theCitizens Savings Bank of San Pedro, of whichhe also is a director, and has built a numberof fine residences in the city. He served forseveral years as school trustee, and since 1892has filled the office of city treasurer of SanPedro. In his political affiliations Mr. Weldt is aDemocrat, and fraternally he holds member-ship in a number of lodges, among them beingthe Knights of Pythias, Woodmen of theWorld, Eagles, and Benevolent ProtectiveOrder of Elks.
