Brain haemorrhage. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the brain of a 57 year old woman with a haemorrhage. A large mass of blood is at right (light grey). Bleeding (haemorrhage) in the brain occurs when a blood vessel, such as an artery, ruptures. It may be caused by a head injury, high blood pressure or vascular disease. The area of the brain supplied by the ruptured artery may die due to lack of oxygenated blood, leading to a stroke.
