Cray X-MP supercomputer. Units and workstation (upper left) for a Cray X-MP supercomputer at the Livermore Computer Center, at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California, USA. This supercomputer was the first to be installed with the Network Livermore Timesharing System (NLTSS) operating system. This was the first totally new supercomputer operating system in 20 years. Five years in design the new system was installed by 1988. It was a distributed processing system that increased the efficiency of the facility's supercomputers.
