In 1873 he was appointed Superior andsent to open a new house and church of the Society at Augus-ta, Ga. For seven years he labored in this new field and theesteem and affectionate remembrance which the people ofAugusta entertain even to this day for this grand old manare sufficient proofs of the faithfulness of his service, of hisentire forgetfulness of self and of his devotion to his charges. General thought it ad-visable to entrust to him the government of the entire New Or-leans or Southern Mission of Jesuits, which he intended tomake independent of the province of Lyons, France. In 1880the appointment was made and Fr. Butler was named firstSuperior of the independent mission of New Orleans. Aneight year enterprising administration during which the infantmission of New Orleans was placed on an organized basisand grew to double its size, proved the wisdom of the choiceand that Fr. Butler was eminently fitted for the these eight years besides attending to the affairs ofthe entire mission, Fr. Butler also found time to govern theJesuit church and college at New Orleans, to found a churchat Selma, Alabama in 1881, a college and church at Galvestonin 1884, and a novitiate at Macon, Ga., in 1887.
