Egyptian archaeology, Al-Fayoum oasis. View of archaeological excavations of the old city of Tebtunis at the Al-Fayoum oasis. This oasis, the biggest in Egypt, is about 150 kilometres from Cairo. The Ancient Egyptian city of Tebtunis dates to around 1800 BC. During the Ptolemaic period (300-30 BC) and the later Roman period it was an important centre for commerce. Excavations led by Italian and French archaeologists, starting in 1988, have uncovered large areas of the old city.
