Ancud, on the north coast of Chiloe Island, was founded in 1769 as a Spanish stronghold. After Peruvian Independence in 1824, it became the Spanish Crown's last possession in South America., the Spanish Crown's departure from America being signed at the San Antonio Fort, after its capture, 1826. Tyre marks indicates the beach in the foreground is of use to local tourists. Oysters and seaweed are beach delicacies in Chilote cuisine.
