Sir Alexander Fleming, Scottish bacteriologist, born August 6th 1881 & died March 11th 1955. Fleming discovered in 1928 that secretions from a fungus called Penicillium notatum destroyed colonies of the bacterium Staphylococcus sp. The secretion was named an antibiotic. Clinical trials and the commercial production of antibiotics did not occur until the Second World War.
