A green-painted traditional post office pillar box on Dame St in Dublin, Ireland, dating from the reign of British King Edward VII (1901-10). Following the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 the new government of the Irish Free State immediately painted the British red letter boxes green as a visual mark of the country's new independent identity. Many original British 19th and early 20th century post boxes can still be found in Ireland.
