Mrs Charles had been disabled all her life, having been born without her left hand and arm up to three inches below the elbow. Nevertheless she had worked in a Lancashire textile factory as a ring doubler for seven years. She could also cone or cheese wind, use any kind of sewing machine, knit and crochet
