Sir Titus Salt (1803-1876), British industrialist and philanthropist. The son of a wealthy businessman, Salt was admitted into the wool trade as a dealer (stapler), and started to experiment with unusual types of wool. Soon he was running several small mills, and in 1850 decided to merge them in one site. He purchased several acres of land, and built his new mills complete with housing, bath houses, an institute of learning, schools, churches and a hospital. The whole, called Saltaire, was a self-contained working community offering accommodation and recreation far better than the city slums.
