Modern Slate Fence (inspired by traditional slate fences of the local area) borders driveway to traditional stone built Victorian terraced house. Overhung by scented japenese cherry Prunus serrulata 'Jo-nioi', Originally slate fences were made from waste slabs, or off cuts from the local slate quarries, but this one is made from specially ordered machine cut slabs from Penrhyn Quarry Bethesda. Traditionally they are a common and distinctive type of boundary in North Wales near the slate quarries where lower grade slate was plentiful, and a convenient alternative to stone walls and earthern banks. In recent times, as the quarries have reduced their production the waste slates are hard to source and much in demand by consevation organisation. The base of the slabs are dug into the ground and a double strand of galvanised fencing wire is wound along the tops to hold them together.
