Torhouse Stone Circle, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

A Bronze Age stone circle considered to unusual in this part of Scotland. Most stone circles of this type seem to be aligned with the rising or setting sun or moon. This example may have been laid out in a design related to the mid-winter sunrise. The 19 dumpy granite boulders are graded in height with the larger stones in the south-eastern sector. In the centre of the circle is a ring cairn and a setting of two upright boulders and another boulder recumbent.
