Bishopstone strip lynchets Wiltshire


THE STRIP LYNCHETTS ARE A SERIES OF TERRACES EACH APPROXIMATELY FIVE METRES IN DEPTH AND SEVERAL METRES LONG CUT INTO THE HILLSIDE ABOVE THE VILLAGE OF BISHOPSTONE AT DATE OF THESE TERRACES IS UNKNOWN,AS IS THEIR ORIGINAL USE IT IS GENERALLY ACCEPTED THAT THEY WERE USED FOR CULTIVATION THOUGH THE FACT THAT THEY ARE NORTH FACING HAS LEFT SOME DOUBT ABOUT ARE NEVER PLOUGHED AND THE AREA IS USED AS PERMANENT GRAZING LAND FOR SHEEP AND CATTLE.
