'Le Plan Trochu', 1870-1871. Artist: Anon
'Le Plan Trochu', 1870-1871. After the disastrous defeat of the French at Sedan and the capture of Napoleon III, the Prussians surrounded Paris on 9 September 1870. The defence of the city was commanded by General Jules Trochu, who became President of the French Government of National Defence after a revolution on 4 September 1870. Trochu's plan for resisting the siege was based on a passive defence of the city, which was unpopular with much of the populace who wanted to see a more aggressive strategy involving breaking through the encircling Prussian forces. Paris held out despite famine and great hardship until 28 January 1871, by which time capitulation had become inevitable. Cartoon from Actualites. From a private collection.
