Lunar eclipse and Mars at twilight. The Moon and Mars are near the horizon at far left, with the Moon above and to the left of Mars. The glow of the sunset is at far right. The Moon is orange here because a total lunar eclipse is taking place. This occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon. The orange colour of the Moon (sunlight reflected from the Moon after passing through the Earth's atmosphere) is due to shorter wavelengths, such as blue light, being scattered more in Earth's atmosphere than longer wavelengths, such as red light. Photographed on 27 July 2018, from Campinho in the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve, Portugal. For time-lapse and time-exposure images of this scene, see image C042/9747 and C042/9748.
