The name printed above is the one nowaccepted by botanists. The leaf-blight is especially destructive in the nur-sery, the young trees oftenbeing defoliated before themiddle of August. Bear-ing plum trees also losetheir leaves prematurelyon account of it. Treatment.—Exper-iments conducted on anextensive scale by the OhioExj^eriment Station showthat in the orchard thisdisease may be preventedby spraying with dikiteBordeaux mixture. Twoor three sprayings early inthe season are deemed suflB-cient. It should not beused too late, on accountof the liability of the mix-ture to remain on theripened frait. In the nur-sery the Bordeaux mixtureis also a preventive; theresults of its use are wellrepresented in Fig. 34, re-duced from i)hotographicviews of experiments conducted by the Division ofVegetable Pathology. Literature.—This disease has frequently been dis-cussed in our horticultural literature, although verylittle of yalue concerning remedies has been published. FIG. DISEASED PLUM LEAF. THE PLUM LEAF-RUST 65 until quite recently. An account of the Ohio experimentsmentioned above will be found in the Bulletin of theOhio Experiment Station for December, 1891 (v. lY,pp. 216-217), and of the nursery experiments in theJournal of Mycology {v. VII, No. 3).
