SOUTHERN RAILWAY RIGHT-OF-WAY WORK CREW, WITH A CAR THAT HOLDS NEW QUARTER MILE LONG SECTIONS OF RAIL WHICH WILL REPLACE THE OLD TRACK. THE COMPANY IN 1974 HAD AN AVERAGE OF FOUR CREWS NUMBERING 50 TO 55 MEN EACH WORKING ON THE SYSTEM'S 10,531 MILES OF RAILROAD TRACK. MAXIMUM SAFE SPEED ON VIRTUALLY ALL THE SOUTHERN TRACKS IS 60 MILES PER HOUR. ANOTHER RAILROAD COMPANY HAS SOME TRACKS WHICH HAVE A SPEED LIMIT OF EIGHT MILES PER HOUR
