She was long prominent in chari-table work, and in the cause of womens suffrage waswell known as the able and zealous colaborer of Cady Stanton, Mrs. Isabella Beecher Hooker,and others in that field of MARY SHANNON. It is impossible to enumerate all the charities that shehad helped ; but the one which was nearest to her heartwas the Rebecca Pomroy Newton Home for Orphanand Destitute Girls, of which she was one of the originalfounders, in association with her aunt, Miss Mary ClarkShannon. SIXTH GENERATION 303 The following tribute by the President of the Home was appendedto the Twenty-ninth Annual Report of the Directors, and published inthe Newton Journal of April 26, 1901 : Mary Shannon, born in Boston, September 19, 1836. Died in her paternalmansion April 19, 1901, aged 64 years, 7 months. The physical presence of Mary Shannon will be no more seen with us, but herunique and beautiful spirit remains to encourage, cheer, uplift and comfort all whowere privileged to know her and felt the inspiration, which ever flowed from thepersonality of this true child of the loving father.
