Tuberculosis. X-ray of the chest of a 25 year old male patient with pulmonary tuberculosis. The affected area of the lungs (dark areas) is shown by a grainy white patch (upper centre left). Pulmonary tuberculosis is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is spread by coughing and sneezing. The bacteria create primary tubercles, nodular lesions of the lungs. Symptoms include fever, weight loss and the coughing up of blood. Treatment is with long term antibiotics.
