The village of Fortuneswell nestles under glowering cliffs on the Isle of Portland. It featured in Thomas Hardy's novel, The Trumpet Major. Hardy observed that - because of the steep site - one man's chimney is his neighbour's doorstep. The name comes from the spring (well) which still flows to this day. Because of its position, in the lea of a steep hill, there are several months in the winter when the sun doesn't rise high enough above the hilltops for it to shine into some Fortuneswell gardens.
