Makin Island’s medical department fully integrates Navy and Marine personnel who are trained to work side-by-side to receive and treat evacuation and rescue patients, respond to humanitarian missions, and ensure the ship’s crew remains fully medically ready. all while maintaining 6 operating rooms, 16 intensive care unit beds and 44 primary ward beds, all which can expand to hold over 60 patients. Makin Island, flagship of Amphibious Squadron (CPR) SEVEN, along with 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), is currently underway conducting integrated training in the 3rd fleet to prepare for an upcoming deployment.
