Male genital cancer, illustration
Male genital cancer, illustration. Cancerous growths on the scrotum and penis several with wall-type margins and the largest showing nodules and is fissured. These are squamous cell carcinomas that may metastasise to inguinal and iliac lymph nodes, then to distant organs. Often exposure to industrial chemicals is the causative agent, but human papilloma virus infection is also suggested in the pathogenesis. Surgical excision may be curative in early presentations but prognosis is poor with more extensive cancers. From Bollinger, O. 1901 Atlas und Gundriss der Pathologischen Anatomie, vol 2. Lehmann, Munich.
