Upon a slab found in digging atthe Friery, Lichfield, the border-legend is arranged after the samemanner, and in this instance it isplaced between lines; and thislegend, which constitutes thesole accompaniment to the crossin this monument, is very curi-ous, as shewing the kind of bar-gains which were made betweenthe monks and the merchant-princes of those days ; whereby,in the present instance, the de-ceased merchant, Richard, isappointed to be merchant toSt. Michael, in consideration ofhis having bestowed upon thefathers of the Friery variousworldly gear and chattels. Theinscription, which is preservedcomplete in Shawes History ofStaffordshire, is as follows :—. Incised Slab, Lichfi Id. RICARDVS . MERCATOR . V1CTVS . MORTE . NOVERCA .QVI . CESSAT . MERCARI . PaVSAT . IN . HAC . IERARCA .EXTVLIS . EPIIEBVS . PAVCIS . VIVENDO . DIEBVS .ECCLESIAM . REBVS . SIC . ET . VARUS . SPECIEBVS .VIVAT . ET . IN . CELIS . NVNC . MERCATOR . MICAELIS . 1 This slab, though designed to commemorate two individuals, bears one cross only. 46 CHRISTIAN MONUMENTS This slab appears to havebeen executed towards theclose of the fourteenth cen-tury. The taste for rhymingLatin, strangely prevalentin the monumental inscrip-tions of the middle ages, isexemplified in this epitaphof the merchant strong, indeed, was thepassion for this species ofcomposition, that the senseappears to have been reck-oned altogether subordinatet
