The remains of the historic Hotel Esplanade integrated into the Sony Center at Potsdamer Platz. Berlin 2005. --- HGW DE054135 RIGHTS PROTECTION AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. Until building work began on the new Potsdamer Platz, the Hotel Esplanade was a solitary ruin in the former wasteland between East and West Berlin. In a spectacular feat of engineering, the Breakfast Room and the Emperors' Room were integrated into the Sony Center. The neo-baroque Emperors' Room, weighing 1,300 tonnes, was lifted onto air cushions and moved around 70 metres to its present position. It is now a restaurant. --- The Sony Center as such is the most famous part of the Potsdamer Platz, an ensemble dominated by glass and steel. Seven individual buildings give space for shops, restaurants, a conference center, luxurious suites, offices, art and film museum, a cinema, and the Sony European headquarter. Designed by Helmut Jahn, construction was completed in 2000. The central feature is the oval forum which is designed as a public area and is therefore open to the neighbouring streets. The roof construction is spectacular engineering work: the membrane of tent style roof is fastened to a steel ring which joins the flanking buildings.
