The Bocca della Verita (Mouth of Truth) in the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin
The Bocca della Verita is a large stone disc carved with the face of a man. It is in the porch of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. According to tradition a liar risks having their hand cut off if they dare to put it in the mouth of the image. In fact the stone was probably a Roman drain cover.
