Depressing the Arms.—Depression of the arms against resistancebrings the trunk muscles into action in just as vigorous fashion aswe have seen in lifting. Here the action of the arm needs to bereinforced by the contraction of the trunk muscles that are on thesame side of the spinal column as the arm, the abdominal groupworking when the arm is forward and the muscles of the same sidewhen it is sideward. In depressing the arms forcibly in the forwardposition the flexors of the hip also contract. The action of the trunk muscles in this case can be felt in such GYMNASTIC MOVEMENTS 283 movements as slow downward movement of the arm while the handholds the handle of an overhead pulley or a chest pulley, but it ismost noticeable in quick and forcible movements, like strikingdownward with a hammer or dumb-bell. The movements of thearms in climbing also show this effect on the trunk muscles. Inall these mo
