Horae (Tnpai)> originally the goddesses of theorder of nature and of the seasons, in especialthe rain-giving goddesses, but in later timesalso the goddesses of order in general and ofjustice. In the Iliad we have clear evidence ofthe belief that they are the Olympian divinitiesof the weather : therefore they open or shut thedoors of heaven, which are a cloud—that is, theygive or withhold rain, the source of fruitfulseasons ; but this has been materialised intoa door opening for the passage of the gods.(II. v. 750, viii. 393; cf. Paus. v. 11, 7; Horae (Seasons). (From a coin of Com modus.) Fast. i. 125.) Hence they bring wealth orgifts generally (II. xxi. 450). In the Odyssey,on the other hand, they are mentioned onlywith the more abstract, impersonal, idea of thechanging seasons. As the weather is regulatedaccording to the seasons, they are further de-scribed as the goddesses of the seasons. Thecourse of the seasons is symbolically describedas the dance of the Horae. Carpo and Auxowere worshipped from very early times. TheHora of spring accompanied Persephone everyyear on her ascent from the lower world ; and
