WASHINGTON DC, United States — The Jefferson Memorial stands behind a stretch of old, gnarled cherry trees along the Tidal Basin in winter. These historic trees, not yet in bloom, were later removed as part of the Tidal Basin Seawall Reconstruction Project that began in summer 2024. The major project aims to address flooding and erosion issues affecting the area's infrastructure and iconic cherry trees.

The Jefferson Memorial, a neoclassical monument dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, is situated on the south bank of the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC. Designed by architect John Russell Pope, the memorial was dedicated in 1943. It features a bronze statue of Jefferson by sculptor Rudulph Evans, surrounded by excerpts from the Declaration of Independence and Jefferson's other writings. The Tidal Basin, completed in 1897, is flanked by cherry trees gifted to the city by Japan in 1912. These trees, primarily Yoshino cherries, have become a symbol of US-Japan friendship and Washington's most famous seasonal attraction. The Tidal Basin Seawall Reconstruction Project, initiated in 2024, addresses long-standing issues of flooding and erosion that threaten both the cherry trees and the surrounding memorials. This comprehensive renovation aims to preserve the area's cultural and historical significance while adapting to environmental challenges, including rising sea levels and more frequent extreme weather events.
