Valary Bloom, #ScienceWoman. March is Women’s History month, and we want to highlight some of the amazing women here at Fish and Wildlife Service on our social media sites. Name: Valary Bloom Title: Fish and Wildlife Biologist Duty station: Sacramento Fish and Wildlife Office Female Conservation Hero or Mentor: Rachel Carson Where did you go to school? California State University, Sacramento How did you get interested in conservation? I spent a lot of time as a child playing in farmlands and open space of Sonoma County. When I was in college, the focus of conservation was on distant rainforests, but I soon also learned the conservation needs of our local landscapes. A career in conservation was a natural fit for me in terms of connecting my love for California’s flora and fauna with helping to protect them for future generations. If you could have one incredible animal adaptation, what would it be? I love the fancy, colorful plumes of some birds. I’d love the ability to suddenly fan out a large display of intricate feathers.
