This image may not be used to state or imply endorsement by CERN of any product, activity or service SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East) project storage ring installation. This is one of 16 cells that will form the storage ring. Each cell consists of dipole (red), quadrupole (green) and sextupole (yellow) magnets around a vacuum chamber. Construction of the independent laboratory in Allan, Jordan, began in 2002 and it was inaugurated in May 2017. SESAME is the only synchrotron facility in the Middle East, and the first in the world to be powered by renewable (solar) energy. Scientific research will be carried out across a number of disciplines, including medicine, physics, biology, archaeology and agriculture. Photographed in Allan, Jordan, in 2016.
