Blue sky view, north to pier, white sea ice blocks and ice floes expanse on wet beach in front of Outer Promenade, St Annes, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach in and around St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, displayed large areas of land-fast blocks of sea ice, several centimetres thick. A blue sky view of sea ice blocks and ice floes on wet beach expanse in front of the Outer Promenade Walkway, looking north to St Annes Pier and the old steamer jetty. St Annes Pier opened in 1885. Fires in the 1970s and 1980s damaged the pier's seaward end, which was demolished, so isolating the old steamer jetty. The steamer was accessed by pleasure steamers navigating the now silted up North Channel of the River Ribble Estuary. The North Channel is visible on maps from the 1890s.
