One kidney (brown, upper left) has a normal appearance. The other is missing. The function of the kidneys is to filter waste products such as urea from the blood to form urine. The urine drains to the bladder (pink, bottom) through the ureters (tubes running downwards). Humans have two kidneys, but can function with only one. The iliac arteries and veins of the groin and pelvis are also shown.
