On Jan. 10, 1856, he was married to Sarah Jane, daughter of Alfredand Margaret C. Blanchard, of Chelsea, and made hishome in Cambridge. Three years later he returned toChelsea. He was elected to the Chelsea CommonCouncil of 1861, and re-elected for two succeedingyears, and during those last two terms he was presidentof that body. He was called from the council to bemayor of the citv, serving as such during the years 1864,1865, and 1866. His services in the city go\ernment. tUSTACE CARtY FITZ of Chelsea were right in the midst of the critical warperiotl, when the soundest judgment was \s mayor of the city he was a strong supporter of Ciov-ernor Andrew, and did much to keep intact the fairname of Massachusetts. Mr. Fitz contributed liberallyof his means for the Union cause. For eighteen yearshe was a trustee, and most of the time chairman of theChelsea Public Library, and at the end of that longperiod, in 18S5, he jiresented to his adopted city a handsome, commo-dious library build-ing, costing upwardsof ^25,000.
