Richard Anthony Proctor (1837-1888), British astronomer. After graduating from Cambridge University, Proctor developed a career as an author of popular books on astronomy. He published more than 15 books and treatises between 1865 and 1888, with his most ambitious work, Old and New Astronomy, left unfinished at the time of his death (it was published in 1892). He became a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1866, and contributed several papers. He is best known for his 1867 map of Mars, one of the earliest such maps, and he has a crater on Mars named after him. This image is from volume 1 (1893) of the US magazine Popular Astronomy.
