We did not find Diphasium madeirense (Wilce) Rothm., cited for Pico da Vara nor the four species, Pteris cretica L., P. mu/tifida Poir., P. tremula , and Doodia caudata , which are cited by Carvalho e Vasconcellos (1968) and Palhinha (1966) as subspontaneous. Occasionally, especially in forests of Cryptomeria and Acacia, we saw tree-ferns (A/sophi/a spp.), escaped from cultivation. Of the following 47 species four are new records for Sao Miguel and two for the FIGURE 4: Distribution map: 1 = Lycopodiella cernua; 2 = Pityrogramma chrysophylla; 3 = Equisetum telmateia; 4 = Asplenium marinum; 5 = Adiantum capillus-veneris.
