I HuTTON.—On some New Zealand Fishes. 105 former opinion that it is preferable to keep them both in Haast has proposed (Trans. Inst., V., p. 274) to establish anothergenus for the Cat-fish with a filament; hnt Kathetostoma was not separatedfrom Anema by Dr. Giinther on account of its having extra spines on theprffioperculum, mandibula, and throat, as Dr. Haast supposes, but because it isnaked, while Anema jDossesses miniite scrdes. As, however, both our Cat-fislies have minute scales, while one has a filament in its mouth and the otherhas not, it seems to me impossible to keei> up this distinction. The adoptionof Dr. Haasts suggestion would necessitate the sepaiation of our Cat-fish intotwo genera, and add a third genus, where, I think, one is sufficient. I cannot, therefore, agree with his views. 34A. KATHETOSTOMA MACULOSA. UranosGOjnis maculosus, Solander, Pise. Austr., , p. 21 (1770). Uranos-copus maculatus, Richardso
