The mouth is often providedwith very formidable teeth pointing backwards. The branchial 4o8 TELEOSTEI apparatus is usually reduced, and the branchiostegals delicateor absent. The gill-opening is narrowed to a small round aperture,and the gill-clefts small. The pectoral fins, and even the girdle,may be lost. Family Muraenidae. The body is scaleless and generally conspicu-ously coloured. The tail is very long (Fig. 403).. Fig. picta, Ahl. (After Ginither.) A small group of very highly specialised fish whose affinitiescannot yet be determined. They have a superficial resemblance tothe Eels, from which they clifier in many important osteologicalcharacters, and in the possession of closed ovisacs. The air-bladderis absent. The skull is like that of the Clupeiformes; the parietalsmeet, the maxillae, however, are almost excluded from the marginof the mouth, and the hyojmlatine arcade is closely fitted tothe narrow, firmly ossified cranium. The trunk being muchlengthened and the tail short, the anus is usually far back, andthere are a large number of vertebrae. In Cliilohranchus the tailis long. Strong parapophyses bear short ribs.
