Long eared bat (Plecotus sp.) - with original hand colour, from Bechstein \ Getreue Abbildungen Naturhistorischer\" ( Realistic Pictures from Natural History) Published Nuremberg 1796. This was the second edition of a series of eight published between 1795 and 1807. Johann Matthaus Bechstein (11 July 1757 â 23 February 1822) was a German naturalist, forester and conservationist. Indeed he is one of the first recorded conservationists, famous for his call to protect animals like bats and toads, that were not highly regarded at the time. Bechstein's bat is named for him."
