It is not easy to arrive at an explanation of the great variabilitymet with in the duration of the symptoms in this class of case. Itis a well-known fact that so lons^ as the tumour is confined withinthe walls of the oesophagus its progress is slow, but once it passesbeyond the confines of the tube and invades the surroundingtissues a rapid development usually takes place.
