PRINCIPLE OF COMPRESSION. 65 of ligature of the vessel, it was not necessary that the whole of the cir-culation through the artery should he entirely and permanently arrested, but merely that it should be lessened in quantity and force to such anextent as to be compatible with the deposition of laminated filirine inthe sac; and it was clearly shown by examination after death that, ifthe pressure were properly conducted, the artery was in no way injuredor occluded at the part compressed. The recognition of the true prin-ciples on which compression of the artery leading to the sac cures theaneurism, has led to important results ; for as the severe pressure thatwas formerly considered necessar} is now known not only to be unne-cessary, but often to be absolutely injurious, no amount of compressionis exercised beyond what is requisite to restrain and moderate the flowof blood into the sac; no attempt being made to compress the artery soseverely as to lead to its obliteration by inflammatio
