An old engraving of the game, trick or illusion of the ‘Prisoners’ release’ puzzle. It is from Victorian book of the 1890s on sports, games and pastimes. Two pieces of string or tape are tied round the wrists of two people to handcuff or manacle them together. The puzzle is for them to liberate themselves, or for anyone else to suggest a way without untying the string. The solution is for B to make a loop of their string passing under either of A’s ‘manacles’, slipping it over A’s hands – both will become free. Reverse the procedure and the two ‘prisoners’ are tied up as before.
