1905 From Vanity Fair \Men of the Day\" by Leslie Ward (Spy). Sir Edwin Ray Lankester. (15 May 1847 â 13 August 1929) was a British zoologist who ranked among the most influential of his day. He held chairs at University College London and Oxford University. He was the third Director of the Natural History Museum, and was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society. He was an advocate of selectionism - largely through an appreciation of the work of August Weismann- and though his direct work may have left less of a direct legacy, it can be felt through students such as Julian Huxley, HG Wells, and Goodrich. He always had friends in high places, but his own rudeness could cause dispute. His time as Director of the NHM was marred by conflict."
